Laurie Handlers was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1947 and moved to Oceanside, Long Island, NY when she was 7 years old. Laurie went to college at The George Washington University in Washington, DC and then continued on there in graduate school. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sociology and a Masters degree in Education. For as long as she can remember, she has sought to make a difference in the world. It’s the only thing that has remained as part of her original driving force.
Laurie spent the years following college exploring what she wanted to do for her life’s work. She moved to San Diego, Key West, Boston, Los Angeles, and then back to Washington, DC. She taught elementary school, college, graduate school and adult education. Then she went into corporate consulting working as an external and then internal consultant and trainer. She has won awards for her welfare-to-work training programs and continues to design cutting edge courses.
In 1999 she founded Butterfly Workshops, Inc., began teaching Tantra, and not surprisingly gave it her own Butterfly twist. She blended well known transformational technologies with basic western Tantra and was off and running in a new and powerful modality.
Something Laurie laughs about is that she consulted a psychic about the name ‘Butterfly Workshops’ and was told that she should call it ‘Eagle Workshops’ because butterflies are too flighty. She then sought out the butterfly expert from the Smithsonian Institute and asked if caterpillars had a choice as to whether or not they could transform. He explained that “No, they have no choice, it’s in their DNA. They, in fact, must transform!” Little known to many of us, while in the pupa stage, cells form and begin eating the caterpillar cells. These are butterfly cells, so in essence, the caterpillar must die unto itself to become its new self. Laurie believes that we all must do this and that humans fool themselves into believing that they can prevent change. Prevent change? Impossible she asserts. Transformation and change? Inevitable for humans and Butterflies!
Her career includes over thirty years as a corporate change consultant, individual empowerment coach and international seminar leader. She is a dynamic speaker, facilitator and has taught Butterfly Tantra workshops for women, men, couples and singles. Her course work includes Ancient Indian, Tibetan and Egyptian Tantric techniques and secrets that are the basis of healing the body, releasing past emotional trauma, stopping the aging process, and reducing stress.
